Xbox 720 will be $ 99 with cable TV subscription provides Analyst

According to comments made by veteran video game industry analyst Michael Pachter, the next generation could be very strange indeed. From the current generation's model of paying upfront in one lump sum, Pachter believes the industry is headed toward a cell phone-style subsciption model.

Speaking at Develop, Pachter said the consoles need to adapt to survive. One such way to adapt will to become multipurpose devices, similar to what we've seen from Microsoft over the past two years. Pachter said he expects MS to follow their experimental $99 Xbox 360 subscription model unveiled last month. He added that he believes they'll partner with a cable provider to essentially turn your Xbox 360 into an all-in-one device for making your tv into a SmartTV.

He also believes that this device will be able to split its signal to several TVs, allowing you to watch different things on different TVs (or with Xbox Smart Glass.)

“I think Microsoft’s got it right [with their console strategy], and I think Sony will keep plugging away because they have an integrated strategy across all of their consumer electronic products. Microsoft, they have a strategy to take over the world," Pachter said.

“Console will have to be multiple purpose devices, though. The Xbox 720, this is my prediction, is going to be your television as well [as your game console]. You’ll be able to tune into television through it."

“You wont need a ‘smart TV’ when you’ve got an Xbox 720, it will be your television and your internet. It’s going to be open architecture and I think it’s real trick will be that one Xbox will be able to display television to as many screens as you have in your possession."

To be fair though, you probably don't need to be a veteran analyst to see this coming. We had many of the same predictions last monthwhen the subscription-based 360 was unveiled. That said, adding a long-time analyst with insider information into the rumor mill definitely gives it a lot more credence.
